Mentoring

Project Description:

The volunteer will act as a friend and mentor to a refugee living in the Sunderland area. The time and place of meetings are decided independently and the organisation asks for a minimum of five hours contact time per month and for 1 year’s commitment to the project.

Volunteers can expect to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds, which would help a student gain confidence in their own knowledge and abilities, get satisfaction from giving support to someone who really needs it and friendship.

Home Visiting Service

Project Description:

Based in Sunderland, volunteers visit lonely, isolated or house bound older people in their homes on an arranged date and time agreed with the client and volunteer. Volunteers must be patient, empathetic and have an understanding of the issues faced by older people.

Telephone Companionship & Advice Service

Project Description:

Based in Sunderland volunteers are required to make regular telephone calls to lonely, house bound and isolated older people in the local community. The aim of the service is to give advice, information and friendship. Volunteers must have a clear and cheerful telephone manner and be aware of the issues faced by older people.

Project Description:

Based in Sunderland volunteers are required to assist in a project for ‘Young Carers’. That is, young people who, for a variety of reasons, have become the primary carer in the home. The project aims to take the young people away form their daily responsibilities and allows them to experience a childhood. Working in groups volunteers will escort the young carers on transport whilst on outings, befriend them, be a source of support and join in a variety of other activities with the young people. Help is also required in publicising the project at various events around the country and the production of a newsletter.

One to One Mentor

Project Description:

Based in Newcastle, Inline is a floating support project; supporting over 70 (previously homeless) young people make the transition to independent living. The aim of this project is to offer practical support to the young people in making a tenancy a home and to encourage and support the transition into independent living. The main role of the volunteers is to; with the young person, completing decorating/DIY tasks prior to or after their taking up their tenancy, to offer support to young mother’s, to accompany and support the young people spending their grant, enable young people to acquire the skills to maintain their own household.

Mentoring

Project Description:

Based in Sunderland the aims of this organisation are to prevent young people becoming involved in offending behaviour. The role of the volunteer is to meet with a young person at least once a week at an agreed time, to share skills, advice and to offer support and guidance. Together the young person and the mentor identify, set and work towards achieving goals. These goals are specific to each young person and will hopefully help towards reducing the risk factors associated with the young person’s offending behaviour.

This organisation supports people with a learning disability. A ‘friendship’ volunteer could make a significant impact on improving the quality of life of a person who has a learning disability. The role of the volunteers is to help reduce isolation often experienced by someone with a learning disability by creating opportunities for building social networks and community links. Mentoring

Project Description:

The role:

* To build relationships between (mentees) asylum seekers, refugees age of 16-25 so they can share cultural understanding, helping refugees to develop their confidence, communication skills and employability

* The volunteer (Mentor) of age 16- 25 will be able to commit to help and support the mentee at least five hours a week for a minimum period of three months

* Provide support, structure, ideas and inspiration as the mentee works towards their own individual goals

* Help to build self-confidence and assist with communication, the gaining of knowledge and cultural awareness

* Help the mentee to focus and identify the actions they need to take in order to achieve what they want

* Offer friendship and a non-judgmental attitude towards the mentee's problems

* Guide the mentee by referring them to others when their own experience is insufficient

* Have an awareness of the importance of confidentiality and of the expectation of the mentee

* Be aware of their own limitations and boundaries and of where to go for support and information

* Understand the principles of equal opportunities and non-discrimination

* Be non-judgmental and able to accept other people's values and beliefs as well as rights and choices, as having equal value to their own
