Governance is the most important volunteering role in education and a full, diverse governing body can be a source of enormous strength to a school. As well as the satisfaction of knowing they are making a real difference, our volunteers use and improve a range of highly transferable skills, work with new people and have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and experience in a new environment.
A school’s governing body is responsible for raising school standards through the following key roles:
* Setting strategic direction
* Promoting high standards of education and achievement
* Monitoring and evaluating school performance
* Budgetary allocation and control
The governing body supports school staff, enabling them to provide the best possible standards of education and helps children throughout the school realise their aspirations and expectations.
An effective governing body is a source of enormous strength to a school and is increasingly important in helping to deal with new major issues such as the Every Child Matters agenda and the extended schools programme (e.g. establishing before- and after- school clubs to help support parents and families), the pace and type of change, the implications of faith, race and language and the influence of new technology.

Playing for Success Volunteers
Would you like to work in a Football Club?
Would you like to go to all the places in a football stadium members of the public do not see, such as the players changing rooms, media lounge and tunnel leading out onto the pitch?
If you would, then come and volunteer as a mentor here at the Study Support Centre at Sunderland Football Club. Our mentors work with groups of children to help improve their literacy and numeracy skills and we use the environment of the Stadium of Light to help achieve this. We also have state of the art ICT equipment in our Study Support Centre where we undertake our classroom activities. Previous mentors inform us they really enjoyed their placements at Sunderland Football Club and we look forward to working with you when you are here.
